“Clean Water is Northeastern Oklahoma’s Future”
"Big Chicken", by Scott Swearingen of Tulsa, Oklahoma, documents the impact of the factory poultry corporations on the residents of rural northeastern Oklahoma, fouling water, siting mega chicken barns and producing mounds of nasty, stinking chicken waste adjacent to homes. This onslaught threatens the drinking water of Tulsa, the safety of the Illinois River, the purity of Spring Creek and the livelihood of small farmers. Oklahoma is left with rutted roads, dirty air and water, depleted water wells, and little economic value to our state.

Save the Illinois River

Since being chartered in 1984 by the State of Oklahoma, Save the Illinois River, Inc. or STIR, has been diligently working to educate people about their environment and provide them with the resources to take action to protect and save the Illinois River.

In addition to saving the Illinois River, STIR also works to preserve Flint Creek, Barren Fork Creek, and Tenkiller Lake. STIR is the voice of Oklahoma Scenic Rivers.
