Guidelines for letters to the Oklahoman
Where to Send LettersMAIL: Your ViewsThe OklahomanP.O. Box 25125Oklahoma City, OK 73125E-MAIL: Yourviews@oklahoman.com
Guidelines for Your Views
Your Views Guidelines What we require 1. Letters of 250 words or less. 2. Name and postal address, including Zip code. Your address won’t be published. 3. Daytime telephone number, including area code. 4. “Name withheld” letters are not accepted. Nor are letters signed with initials only or a first initial and last name.
5. We don’t accept attachments. 6. Authors are limited to one letter every 28 days. 7. When referring to a news story or a letter published in Your Views, cite headline or letter writer’s name and date of publication.
8. Follow standard rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation. What we don’t publish 1. Poetry, rhyme or overly informal letters. 2. Consumer complaints and most “thank you” letters. 3. Form letters or generic Web site letters. 4. “Open” letters to government officials. 5. Letters written for a class assignment or as part of an organized letter-writing campaign. 6. Most sports-related letters. 7. Letters that have been previously published or letters submitted to other publications. 8. Letters covering topics of interest only to a localized area. 9. Items sent to Your Views via a Web site other than NewsOK.com. Why we edit letters Editing is done for the benefit of our readers. Editing for length allows us to accept a greater number of letters. Letters most likely to be edited are those that are twice as long as needed to make a point and those that try to make too many points.
What we look for 1. Brevity and focus: Cover your topic in the fewest possible words. Get to your main point quickly. Stay focused. Avoid unrelated topics or parenthetical expressions.
2. Readability: Readers are attracted to short sentences. Avoid using too many numbers and prepositional phrases. Avoid clichés.
3. Timeliness: Send your letter while the topic is timely, but not so quickly that you don’t review what you’ve written.
4. Fairness: Make your points on the merits rather than emotion. Avoid disparaging a group of people based solely on the actions of one member of that group.
Letter Selection We can’t discuss why we decided not to publish a letter. Most letters we select are published within 4-7 days of receipt. If your letter follows our guidelines but isn’t published, please try us again soon!
