The group reviewing the instream phosphorus limit for Oklahoma Scenic Rivers will recommend that the limit not be weakened or changed from the present .037 mg/L total phosphorus.
According to STIR's sources, the Arkansas members of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board's Technical Advisory Group (TAG) objected strongly to the decision.
Now, the OWRB must approve the TAG recommendation.
Northwest Arkansas cities and a regional economic development organization have retained an attorney and it is likely that a lawsuit will be filed to block implementation of the limit this July.
Save the Illinois River (STIR) members fought hard for the limit adopted by Oklahoma and the USEPA ten years ago. Northwest Arkansas politicians and cities complained the limit was impossible to meet because of population growth in the watershed.
